Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth and gums that replace your natural teeth. These removable devices allow you to chew, speak, and smile comfortably if you have missing teeth. Made of acrylic resin and metal materials, dentures mimic the look and feel of your natural teeth. Natural suction, dental adhesive, or dental implants hold them in place.

Are there different types of dentures?

The team offers three types of dentures:

Complete

Also called full dentures, these are complete sets of upper and lower teeth that replace all of the natural teeth in your mouth. Natural suction or a durable dental adhesive holds them in place to keep them from slipping or shifting when you speak or eat. Complete dentures include prosthetic teeth and a pink acrylic base that covers the roof of your mouth.

Partial

The team recommends partial dentures when some of your natural teeth are still intact. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored base that attaches to your remaining healthy teeth with metal clasps. They don’t cover the roof of your mouth like full dentures.

Implant-supported

Implant-supported dentures use dental implants as their foundation. Implants are surgically placed in your jawbone. They provide a more secure and stable foundation for the denture, which snaps onto the implants.

What is the process of getting dentures like?

You can expect several appointments when getting dentures. During your first visit, the team takes impressions of your mouth to create a custom mold of your teeth and gums. This mold serves as a model for your dentures.

Once the team has the appropriate fit, they work with you to choose the type, color, shape, and size of your dentures. This is an important step in creating effective, natural-looking dentures that match your facial features and complement your smile. Finally, the team sends your comprehensive plan to a dental lab that fabricates your dentures.

When your dentures are ready, you return for a fitting appointment to ensure they fit properly and comfortably in your mouth. The final visit involves placing your dentures and providing instructions on caring for them.
